I need help entering info on a pedigree. I don't know how to enter my half sister from my mom's previous marriage. I'm also not clear on how to enter deceased relatives on the pedigree... Can anyone help me?

  1. Cool Rogue, your first answer, nailed it. A pedigree chart has just you, then your parents, then THEIR parents, and so on for as many generations as you know. No brothers, sisters, half brothers, half sisters, ex husbands, ex wives, fourth cousins . . .

If you run out of paper, you put  a note on great-great grandpa saying that person # 26 on this chart is person #1 on chart 4.

For each person you'd enter birth, death and marriage date and place. Some of those dates and places would be blank.

If you make up Family Group Sheets, you make a different one for each family. "Family" just means a man and a woman had one or more children. So, if you got back to a fellow who had two wives, (one after the other, I mean; not a polygamist), trifled with the upstairs maid and had an affair with a chorus girl, you would have four FGS.

PAF is a big program. It probably isn't worth your time to download it. You can draw up a pedigree with a pencil and ruler.

  2. In your mom's info, you should add another spouse or other marriage, then enter the info for her former husband, then under him, enter a child (being your half sister).

Entering deceased relatives? Just add a death date and location.

I hope this makes sense, good luck. :-)

  3. First of all a Pedigree Chart would not show your half sister.  If you are talking about a "Family Group Sheet" then you would do 2 one for each of your mother's marriages.

If you want to see an example I will post the URL for my genealogy which is on my webpages.

    This is a pedigree chart:

This is a family group sheet:

You can download free genealogy software for your computer at:

    http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/sto...

Click on the top listing and you can download the program and install it on your computer.  It is very easy to use and all you have to do is enter the information that you have.  You can

then print the forms out.  I've been using PAF for about 25 years and love it...
