  1. The topic appears to suggest that we are somehow not part of nature. Essentially we derive everything that give and sustains our life from nature. We give our bodies at the end to support other life, the rest of nature, if we are not so selfish as to poison our bodies with embalming fluids or burn our bodies to prevent nature from recovering what little we have not already burned away during our life.

When we do something like composting, good as that is, we are not giving back to nature so much as we are not taking that material away from nature. Is there a difference? Yes.

If we were eating out in the garden, eating what we need and leaving the rest right there in the garden, we would not think of that leaving what we do not need as giving back. We would see that as not taking what we do not need or want.

Individually, if we repair damage done by some other person, then we may say fairly that I as an individual have given back to nature, but we, as a species have beaten up on nature as much as we have given back. For instance, if we collectively have created a toxic wasteland, like the Love Canal, and We collectively do something to protect ourselves from that wasteland, we collectively have not really done that much giving back to nature. We have not even returned nature to its pre damage condition.

It is possible for mankind to give back more to nature than we are taking from it, but we have to realize that this may not be very profitable.  We usually plan to take from nature all that we can while returning only enough to barely get by with.
