  1. about 30 hours or so!

  2. Lets see-- Houston to Laredo-6hrs.

    Laredo to Monterrey-4hrs.

    Monterrey- Queretaro by bus-----------9hrs.

take the direct bus routes, the other ones are no fun( trust me )

if I can be of further help,b206m356@yahoo.com

  3. I would allow one full day to get to the Brownsville, TX - Matamoros MX border.  And depending on your style it may take longer than one day to get to Queretaro.  You don't want to drive at night.   The roads are good, but unfamiliarity will slow you down a bit.

  4. Why would you drive? I often go to Mexico from Houston and find it much less expensive and also less trouble to take the bus. With your car,you have the extra insurance and permit costs plus tolls on the major roads & wear and tear on some of the secondary roads. In the larger cities parking and traffic can often be a problem. If by chance you commit a parking violation you may return to your car and find that the police have removed your license plates. You will have to 'walk' to the police station to pay the fine and get your plates returned. Public transportation within Mexico is inexpensive and very efficient. You might want to give it a try.

  5. Don't drive at night in Mexico.  Too many animals wander out onto the highway at night, and some Mexican drivers drive without lights.  By avoiding driving at night, you can save yourself the the terror of hitting an animal or a truck in the dark.  It's about ten hours of straight driving to get from Matamoros to Queretaro (about 620 miles) and 558 pesos in tolls (if you take the toll roads--which is the only way you could make that time).  I'd drive Houston the Brownsville and spend the night there; then cross the border early in the morning to get an early start.  Buy Mexican auto insurance (for the days you'll be in Mexico) online or in Brownsville.

If you don't have the title for your vehicle, you need a letter from the lending instituion stating that it's OK to take the vehicle across the border.

There's more info at the site below.

  6. You can see the map and recommended route below.  This site always gives too short a time allowance, add about  4 to 5 hours.  You will need a Mexican car permit and Mexicn car insurance. See next 2 sites.  You will also need a Guia Roji, the Mexican road  atlas...can buy one at a big book store or order from Amazon.com. I hope you speak at least passable Spanish.    Driving can be challenging, but can be done. VERY unwise to drive at nite, so would be wise tost y overnite in Tx., then start out in the early morning from the border.  You can use your ATM card to get pesos out after you cross the border...get best exchange rate that way.  If your spouse is not travelling with you and your children are under 18, you must have a letter of permission from him/her signed and notarized, giving you permission to take the kids out of the U.S. and into Mexico.  This is Mexican law.  You may or may not be asked for this letter at any time.  See next site below, and read section on minors under "Entry Requirements."  You will need a gov't issued photo I.D.and either a passport or birth certificate to cross the border. The children will need a birth certificate. If they are teenagers, I think it is best for them to have their own photo I.D. too...a state I.D.card...though it is not required.  If there is a choice between a free road, "libre" and a toll road, "cuota", always take the toll road.  Hope you have a good trip.
