I'm almost sure there is a reciprocal 3 month visa-free stay period for both nations.

What you need to do is contact immigration and ask. You may not need nothing more then their passports. Good luck and hope all is well with your Gandad.

Yes.  Americans with US passports can visit the UK without a visa or other immigration forms.  I think they can stay 3 months without a visa.
