What do Americans mean when they say "When in Rome, do as Romans do"?

  1. It means when you go visit somewhere out of your comfort zone, do as the locals do. Eat what they eat, shake hands the way they do, go places they do, etc. It makes for a more complete experience.


  2. Its the ideal that while rome was in charge of the world they could do as they pleased.  To this day, romans can throw down on the party scene.  Having said that, you can translate the phrase to "when in Rome, live like a king would."

  3. So if you see lots of Americans eating pasta all'amatriciana, driving like maniacs and going "auooo!!!", they're just doing as the Romans do! ;-)
