Hello!!

I am from Spain and I am going to be in US for a whole year with a host family and I will study in a High school.

My host family told me that in my High school there will be two homecomings... so this is the question: Can you tell me any information about homecomings?

Thank you very much :)

Ps: I am from Spain and we don't have homecoming here.

  1. Homecoming is a celebration honoring former students and many of them "come home" to attend the festivities.  I've never heard of a school having 2 Homecomings.  Maybe your host family is trying to say that there is a Homecoming football game on Friday and then there is the Homecoming dance on Saturday.

At the Homecoming football game you may see many parents and former students.  This is usually where they will crown the Homecoming Queen also.  The court is chosen from young girls in the student body and the Queen is generally a senior girl that stands out in her class due to her beauty, charm, and/or academic achievements.

The Homecoming dance is usually just attended by present students.  A boy usually asks a girl he knows or has a class with, if he doesn't already have a girlfriend, so you might get asked to go.  If you do, your dress should be semi-formal (dressy but not a floor-length gown) and your date will give you a corsage (flowers that pin on to your dress or that you wear on your wrist).  At the dance you will take pictures together and there may be a dinner - it depends on the school.

Going to the Homecoming dance with a boy does not automatically make him your boyfriend.  He is just a date for that dance, so you are not obligated to be his girlfriend or anything.  No pressure!  ;-)

Your school will have special celebrations and fun things to do the whole week leading up to Homecoming.  It's a lot of fun so you should definitely try and be a part of it!  Have fun!

    * Edit:  Homecoming celebrations vary from school to school and state to state so obviously they won't all be alike ----- but to tell you the truth, I've never heard of a girl wearing jeans to a Homecoming dance. :-/

  2. this is sooo weird! i'm going to spain next march to stay with a host family! so i can understand your situation. a homecoming is  just a gathering of the students of the school where everyone goes and watches the school's football team play against a rival team and after the game there is a dance. it's casual, you can where your jeans and t-shirt. in some schools like mine the students decorate their clothes with the school's colors to support the football team. i hope you have an awesome time!
