I agree with "Charlie's" answer but recommend simply following the"Attorney's" advice and go ahead and get a new passport.  Chances are you're flying anyway I assume.  Even if you don't plan to come back to the U.S., a passport is always good for traveling anywhere else.  (And you never know:  your plans to not come back might change in the future.)

  3. Go to the Consulate of Costa Rica and get a new one.

  4. You need to go to the nearest Costa Rican  Embassy or consulate to get a new passport  if you plan to FLY internationally.  if you plan to get back to Costa Rica by land or sea, you can wait until you get home to get a new passport.

  5. If you just want to enter Costa Rica then - no.My husband came last year with just the expired resident card and didn't get any problems
