You may take a flight that stops briefly in the U.S., but you will not be able to leave the airport without a visa to the U.S.  The U.S. no longer has transit visas...people flying  on to another place, whose plane has a stop-over in the U.S., must go through customs, then wait in the international lounge until their next flight leaves.  You can go to the website below and enter your nationality, transit point and destination and  click for the info to confirm what i have said here.
