I am from the U.S. and would like to travel to Italy - is 2/3 days enough time in each city...?

There are many tours in Italy:

2 (days) Venice, 2 Florence, 2 Rome

3 Rome, 3 Florence, 2 Venice

2 Venice, 2 Florence, 3 Rome, 2 Sorrento

My question: is that enough time to spend in each place? I don't want to spend all of this money just to be rushed around.

Or do you recommend staying in a different city for a longer period of time? We are not normally sight-seers, but would like to experience the culture.

  2. I would say that if you are going with a good tour company, and you want to see most of the major attractions, 2 to 3 days per city is fine.  One thing about Italy in case you have never been there before, EVERYTHING is beautiful.   You will find yourself looking at every day buildings like they were some major tourist attraction because of their wonderful designs and the country side is just as beautiful.  If you really want to see most of each city and take your time doing it, I would guess that you would need close to a week in each city.  My wife and took a 10 day tour in August and we went to Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples, Capri and Pompeii and we were happy to have another six days in Italy on our own because the tour was exhausting, VERY FUN, but it was a LOT to do in 10 days!  No matter how many days you have, if you go during the warm seasons make sure to carry a water bottle that you can fill as you will get thirsty, especially in Pompeii as there is no shade.  Also, I would suggest a digital camera and a laptop with a card reader.  You will be taking TONS of pictures, and will quickly run out of storage space on your memory card!  There were 4 or 5 couples on our tour that ran out of space on their memory cards and were asking if they could get copies of my pictures so they did not miss 1/2 of the trip!  In the 16 days that we were in Italy, I took close to 4,000 pictures, just to make sure I had a good shot, or that I did not miss anything!  Of that 4,000 I ended up printing about 700 of them, but I saved most of the rest on DVD.

  3. I think you are on target with your allotment of days you are choosing to spend in each city.  Although it is never enough just spending two to three days per city in Italy.  I would spend 2 TO 3 DAYS in venice to include the Island of Burano.  3 DAYS in ROME(remember one full day just for the Vatican.), The Colloseum, and the Forum with Circus Maximus and Hadrian Garden another), Temple of the Vestal Virgins, the Mouth of Truth and Michelangelo's Moses on the next day.  Florence is great, you can get away with 2 DAYS there including the Duomo, the Academia(David), and the Uffizi Gallery.  Skip a side trip to PISA, totally hammy and touristy.   Sorrento with trips to Amalfi, Positano, Naples with a stop at Pompeii, and Capri should take you 2 FULL DAYS if not THREE.  Try to make it to Sicily if you get a chance.  Taormina for 2 days and one last must visit is Lake Como.  In the north in Lombardy a 45 minute drive from Milan is a must do.  You wont be sorry.

  4. Honestly, make Venice a day trip.  It's beautiful and there is lots to see, but it can be done in one day on foot.  Florence and Rome have lots to offer.  Try to make the best of those places.  Remember too that it's about a 3 hour train ride from Venice to Florence and 3 hours from Flr to Rome on the EuroStar.

  5. These are three of most beautiful italian cities.I'm an italian boy and i've been in all the three cities you have mentioned.i give you an advice:heach city has a lot of things to visit and,i think, it's better that you decide to stay in one of the three cities;so you can visit and admire all museums,churchs,parks,places,squares,gal...

moreover if you have a lot of days to spend here you can also decide to visit a second town;even if,sometimes, also to visit a only one city a week is not enough...:D  anyways if you have to choose between these three tours...choose de second possibility!!but if you are free to decide ,stay a week in rome and another one in florence.venice is in northest and it's a bit far from rome or florence.venice it's better if you visit it another time!!:D have a nice trip!!!bye---CIAO

  6. I've been to Rome, Florence, and Venice. In my opinion, none of those plans give you enough time. You could spend six days just in Rome and not come close to seeing everything.

If you try to do three cities, it's going to be one big marathon. Don't forget to allow time for travel between cities, so it won't be two days in one city, two days in another, and three days in a third. It will be more like 1.5 days, 1.5 days, and 2.5 days.

If you only have a week, I suggest cutting it down to a maximum of two cities. You'll see more, have more time to experience the people and the culture, be more relaxed, and have more fun. Plus, you can always look forward to going back later to see the other cities.

It's a great country. Have fun!
