I am getting 2 12'' speakers, does the rms on the amplifier need to match the total rms of the 2 speakers?

  1. No the RMS "Root Mean Squared" or average power of your amplifier can be less than that rated for your speakers. You should have no problems then. But you might not get maximum bass out of your speakers.

    Peak power poses a bigger problem. Instantaneous power can blow out speakers if the amp is too powerful. If the amplifier is weak, than clipping can occur if the volume is too high. Clipping chops off the signal and turns it into a square wave. This generates harmonics at 3f, 5f, 7f of the fundamental frequency of the clipped signal. These harmonics can blow out your tweeters.


  2. the numbers that u see on the speakers arent that accurate. the best way is to go a spacialist and maybe try a couple of amps.

  3. to get the best results out of ur amp and subs,    match the rms up .........then u will know if the subs u got r worth anything....

  4. More speakers and sub woofers are blown from a dirty or clipped signal then more then rms ratted power.

  5. no it does not need to match just don't get an amp that is rated more then the speakers
