I am inheriting a green amazon hand reared parrot, no idea of age approx 20 years my friends mum has passed away and i have always wanted a parrot, my mum had a rescue parakeete as a child and i love animals, at present i have 2 bengal owls, which i know are so different but the female is imprinted to me so am used to handling birds, but need some advice..

i plan to move the the bird to my lounge to start ,we are having a big orangery built so it will have great views, here are some questions...

Settling in ?, bonding do they imprint to 1 person/?,will it ever talk at this age with patience?, Clipping wings? i have a 6 & 4 yr old so i obviously need to be cautious keep them away? i have read up on diet, seems really time, kindness and patience but any tips would be gratefully appreciated, thanks.

  1. Amazons usually only take to one person usually the one that feeds it.  My orange wing amazon will only come to me and bite the rest of my family.

i recommend that you feed it mainly fruit because sunflowers are harm-full if given to many,  It causes the skin on the nose holes to grow and cover them making it hard for the parrot to breath so be sunflower aware.  i use sunflowers as a treat that way the amount can be monitored.

Don't worry if it doesn't eat for a day or 2 it will soon settle in to its new home and in a few weeks it will be driving you mad with its loud quaking.

  2. i'm a member of this really great site you should join up everyone has loads of knowledge and are always willing to help www.birdboard.com

  3. Usually Amazon Parrots, are good talkers.  I don't know where you live since I am not familiar with some of the words you are using. Here in the U.S. we try to provide the biggest cage possible. Fruits and Veggies, seeds and pellets. No Avocado or Onions. Usually what is healthy for us is good for an Amazon. I personally think it is better to clip wings you avoid so many disasters, as out the door, fans. Don't locate in the kitchen to many smells could be toxic, we have Teflon pans here which can be toxic at high heat.  Your last lines of your paragraph are true.  Good Luck with your New Parrot.
