  1. Someone to take care of it who knows what they are doing.

I dont advise someone who doesnt know anything about horses to get one. it will be more of a hastle than anything. if your horse is poorly taken care of it can get sick and thats just a huge mess.

  2. Your best option is to attend some stable management lessons, they will be able to tell you everything you need in ordeer to take good car of your horse.  As you are in America and I'm over here in GB, there is no point me recomending you certain brands of products to buy.

If you keep the horse at a local stable yard you will save a lot of money on things you have to buy like: pitchforks, brooms, wheelbarrows, etc.  It will also be cheaper for you to get straw and hay as the stable will be buying in bulk.

As far as fencing goes, post and rail is the most expensive but the best for a horse.  Anything involving wire has endless possibilities for injuring the horse.

  3. You might think about putting it in a stable for just a little while. Most stables have instructors that will teach you most everything you need to know. Also, some stables will allow you to do most or all of the care, with a little guidance. And if you run into problems, there are experts to help you. As for fence, hog wire is bad. Horses can get their hooves caught in it and hurt themselves pretty bad. Wood is safer, but a lot of horses will chew the wood. Metal pipe is strong, durable and safe. It is the best for the money.

You will need a halter, buckets, manure fork, wheel barrow, hay, feed, shelter, lead ropes, saddle pad, lunge line, a vet, farrier, topical medications for cuts or scratches, large container for feed, brushes, curry comb, rubber curry, mane and tail combs, shampoo, and many more things I'm probably forgetting. Keeping a horse is expensive. It is not a hobby for the poor.  If you scrimp, he suffers.

  4. a really good stable and lots of food ;)
