I have had the same psychatrist for over 2 years now (sheis also the only one I have ever had), and she recently retired suddenly (she is leaving our location to practice exclusively in another location.

My queston is-What am I going to expect from my new doc? I have been on the same meds, but I feel like I need an ugrade (a stronger benzo), and I am concerned he or she will not take me seriously, or we will simply get off on the wrong foot.

What is good ettiqute (spelling?) for getting started with a new doctor?

  1. Look for a Dr. that specializes in the problem that you are dealing with. This can make an incredible difference. If they are familiar with behavioral therapy as well, this is a great advantage since this can aid or replace many medications for some disorders in some people.

  2. Be hosest, ask for the medication needed, then explain, if need be.If the new Dr. sees you are stable emotionally he/she will be more willing to agee with your feelings. New Doctors are always intiminating, you may want to start with that 'ice breaker'. After one visit you will be able to guage how 'this' Dr.expects to be treated. Good Luck.

  3. If you have a referral to a new doctor from your old one, they will know your story and probably be prepared to continue the treatment you've been receiving as well as to listen to your concerns that you need changes.  Any good doctor should take you seriously; if they don't, then find another, preferably by word-of-mouth so that you know they're good.
