How do I get the humidity down? They told me to keep the AC at like 68. Does that even make sense-shouldn't I use heat to dry it out?

  1. The colder the air is the less capacity it has for holding moisture.  this is why it's so dry in the winter (unless your in phoenix or something) .  so by dropping the temp you effectively drop the humidity level.  the moisture that was in the air will condensate on the cooler things in your house, but probably won't be that noticable.

a dehumidifier will actually remove moisture from the air.  they work well also.  the one in my basement is wonderfull.

  2. get a dehumidifier and put it in your basement that way you wont really hear it and it will still work really well, i have the same problem with humidity and the dehumidifier works amazing

  3. I think just getting floors would help with humidity a great deal!

  4. As cited earlier, get a dehumidifier.  Setting an A/C at 68 is a bit impractical for the duration needed to affect the room's RH(relative humidity).  Depending upon where you live, simply opening the window of the room where the flooring is to be installed would be sufficient.  You will have to listen to the local weather reports and follow the relative humidity statistics.  What is the humidity level they (installers) are seeking?

An even more practical approach would be to have the installers open all the packages of flooring and place 'stickers' between each layer of the flooring to be installed.  Stickers are lengths of wood used to separate the flooring allowing air to circulate freely around the flooring product.   This will acclimate the floor and reduce the likelihood of swelling, shrinking, etc.

  5. Maybe try a dehumidifier

  6. an AC unit removes the humidity in the house making it feel cooler

  7. Your central air unit is a de-humidifier - a very large one.

In the process of cooling your home, your ac unit actually removes much of the humidity in your home. So just keep the ac on and it will remove the humidity. You don't need heat to reduce humidity. The jungles of South America have plenty of heat - but they also have a lot of humidity.

They know what they are talking about - just follow their instructions and the humidity will drop to an acceptable level for your floors to get installed.

I have done the same thing for drywall finishers and painters on jobs.
