My father is also a commercial fisherman, and if possible, I'd like him to perform the ceremony. Does anyone know the legalities on him performing the ceremony for me?

  1. Not all states accept all ordained minister sites. It is best to decide on which state you will marry in, then call the marriage license place and ask them which sites they will accept. They will either have answers or direct you to the local JoP office/Chamber of Commerce, where the office admin's usually have those answers.

If you are renting a boat, NY will probably be your most expensive option. I hear NJ weddings are just as beautiful at a fraction of the cost! However, I have also heard people complain about the smell in NJ. I don't personally know if that's true or not - I have only visited NY, but I can tell you that when people from Seattle complain about the "smell" of Tacoma, it is most definitely true - it's not just people making lame jokes about Tacoma. The plant there actually stinks. So it is something to find out and take into consideration. A lovely, but stinky, boat cruise would suck.

In Philadelphia you would be getting married on the river. You can get married in NJ on the same river (the river is half in each state), or you can get married on the ocean. If that matters to you at all.

  2. Make your life easy and have him get ordained through an online minister site. I chose this one at random and don't know a thing about them so do your due diligence, but this is what I'm talking about:

I don't think that sea captains are actually able to perform valid wedding ceremonies unless they have additional qualifications and even then I think you have to be 'at sea' - you probably will not be heading for International Waters during your wedding cruise!
