i do brake jobs all day every day. it depends if you are getting new rotors or having yours resurfaced with new it takes me 30-45 min, to resurface may take up to 2 hours depending on how warped yours are. rotate your tires every other oil change.

most new brakes have a metal tab and when they get worn down to the minim you will hear them start to squeak as they touch the rotor<

you usually have them inspected about every 6 months and see how much they have worn down,on most cars good brake pads and shoes will last for about 20-25 thousand miles,so you can use miileage as a factor in determining when to have those checked,good luck.

Its very hard to say with any certainty, since so many factors are at play. You should inspect them each time the tires are rotated, since the wheels will be off anyway.
