depends on like fresh water fish or salt water tropical fish  you would need alot for saltwater fish and less stuff for freshwater fish

A good filter (a size bigger than whatever's recommended for your tank on the packaging at least) and a good test kit

edit: you want to be testing nitrate, nitrite, ammonia & pH. if you look up the fish you're interested in getting, it should give you an idea of what the values should be. be sure to look up tank cycling and learn how you will keep each value in check to get the tank ready for full stocking. i'm not as crazy as some of these fish dudes on here, but keeping fish and ensuring their happiness takes time and is all about baby steps.
