  1. Buy the best backpack you can afford, and make sure you always do up the waist strap to take the strain off your back.

Take less clothes than you think you will need.

Wear decent shoes and make sure you 'break them in' before you go.

Arrange to phone home every day - to save money set a time - say 8pm and just let the phone ring twice - a signal to home that all is well.

Save money by avoiding central restaurants in tourst places. Go for the set menu - it's always better value for money.

  2. The trains are a good way to get around italy and not as expensive as in other coutries..is based on distance...eg in that the greater the distance the more the cost.

Hostels are the cheapest way to live..and shared rooms are even cheaper...try websites like www.hostels.com, www.hostelbookers.com, www.hostelz.com...there are quite few, but remember too that the cheaper ones that are further out will take longer to get to and from, may cost you extra in tickets on buses or trains to get to and from the centre of the city/town and if you have limited time this may not be what you want, so take that into account.

You will find that some towns/cities are more expensive eg Florence and Venice are quite pricey compared some other cities..i stayed in a park around a 45min-1hr bus ride from florence city centre...eg it was out of florence itself, but it was cheap and even the bus costs made it cheaper and i met some other travellers which was great and had a good time.

Don't load your bag up..i had a wheely bag...personal preferance...but that meant i didn't have to worry about weight so much BUT dont bring lots of different pairs of trousers...i just bought a pair of jeans, a pair of light trousers ( or skirt if it was hot) a couple of tops, a light jacket, rainproof jacket and mini umbrella and good walking shoes ....that was about it...remember you could buy anything you don't have and you can wash them easily.

don't buy too many trinkets as they fil lup you bag and it does cost a bit to send them..i bought a couple of scarves, some glassware and lots of postcards and that was about it..i was a bit owrried about the glass but i did have it in boxes wrapped in my clothing and it survived well.

A camera and guidebooks are a must too!

Do your research and have a great time"

  3. number 1 rule take only what you need walking with unnessary weight just wrecks your back and takes away the fun of hiking also waterproof boots bag and two pares of socks on at all times the first one takes the sweat well the second on keeps your feet dry also shoes are also a big deal

  4. BRING WATER; I cannot stress the importance of this.

  5. Don't take a ton of clothes with you, you can always do laundry and you can also buy clothes there if you need.  Make 2 photocopies of your passport.  Leave one at home with someone you trust and keep one on you somewhere where you don't actually keep your passport.  Like, keep one on you and the other in your bag.  This way if it is lost or stolen you can go have proof of who you are, etc.  Have fun!  Bring a credit card!

  6. yes take me with you id love to go :(

  7. Load up your backpack. Then take everything out of it and leave exactly half of what you have packed at home. Less is more.

If you are female, use mini-pads to extend the life of underwear.

  8. be sure that your pack fits you perfectly. bring a towel.

  9. Always let somebody know what your itenerary is, as well as your planned route, and if you get lost to the extent that you are completely unable to reach civilization, stay put. If you must move, keep walking in the same direction by aiming for a distant landmark.

If you want to be sure which geographical direction you're moving and don't have a compass, use your watch:

    1) Point the hour hand in the direction of the sun.

    2) Bisect the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark to get the north-south line (substitute 1 o'clock mark during daylight savings time). North will be the direction further from the sun.
