Should I bring a raft or an inner tube or what? Or do I just get in and walk around the shallow parts? (I can't swim.).

  1. wear a life jacket then you can go out farther if you want

  2. Bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray. Make sure your friends who can swim keep an eye on you so you don't drown.

  3. You can swim, you just don't know it yet, because you're ignorant and fearful. People actually float, provided they have a lungful of air. But of course you can't hold your breath forever, so you have to paddle your arms and kick your legs to keep your mouth above water in order to take a breath once in a while.

Walking around the "shallow" parts is a huge mistake for people who are likely to panic were they thrown into the middle of a lake because lakes and oceans often have deep drop offs right at the edge of the shallow parts, and you can't see them, you just drop off and panic and swallow water and dum dum dum.

Better to learn to swim in a nice clear properly labeled for depth swimming pool.

At the lake try dunking your feet until you gain some confidence and experience in your swimming ability.

  4. If you can't swim I would suggest hanging out in the shallow parts. you have to check with the lake if they allow flotation devices in the swimming area. I have been to many that do not, just because it takes too much space when the area is already crowded.
