My girl, 3 and baby boy, 18 months old are still on milk. Heard about Australian Customs do not allow dairy product to Australia. What if I declare the items, is it possible to bring it in?

  1. Buy here.  Australia is a civilised place.

  2. Declare what you have with you & then get what you need here..

The variety in both Pharmacies & supermarkets is enormous & you'll have no difficulty getting some to suit .

  3. according to this site, you can bring up to 1kg of baby formula, as long as you declare it:

(although this site may be outdated, as it looks like it was for Sydney 2000 olympic games)

  4. Baby foods

Personal quantities of commercially prepared canned or jars of baby food containing less than 10 per cent egg product are allowed into Australia from any country, provided the product is in metal cans, retort pouches, or in hermetically sealed glass jars. ‘Retorted’ means that the item is commercially heated in an unopened hermetically sealed container for a time, and to a temperature, sufficient to render the contents commercially sterile. ‘Hermetically sealed’ means airtight or completely sealed from the atmosphere, so that when sealed it does not allow micro-organisms or any other material to enter it.

Milk based foods (including infant formula and cereal) for infants may be imported from any country provided the products are commercially prepared and packaged, and are for the consumption of the accompanied infant. A single opened can/tin of milk-based foods for infants is allowed when accompanying an infant, however all other cans/tins must be unopened.

If the baby foods do not meet the above conditions, the items will be destroyed or re-exported from Australia. Re-export of the items must be paid for by the importer

  5. Don't know. I never brought any dairy products with me when I go on plane trips. Ask the police or airport.

  6. I had a big fight with the quarantine officer (it's quarantine that makes the difficulties, not Customs) at Perth airport at 3am over my young daughter's *unopened* carton of baby milk. Technically, quarantine should be fine with unopened, processed food of any kind, even chocolate bars and biscuits. In practice, it probably depends on what kind of day the quarantine officer is having. They finally let me keep my daughter's milk but they made a big deal out of it.

Either way you must declare any food that you have with you and let the quarantine officers make their decision. If you don't declare and they catch you, you can get huge fines.

You're right, fresh dairy stuff like milk and cheese, as well as meat and vegetable matter including plants, is very definitely NOT allowed, unopened or not!
