Im looking to go on a cruise that leaves new york and stops at 2 destinations in Canada. Can i legally and safely leave the boat at the destination and take a bus back home since i live in canada? Or do i have to stay on the ship and ride back to new york. Im guessing at these destinations it stops at port for people to get off for a while right? Or does it just pass by and not stop for 7 straight days? Thanks

  1. You are going on a 7 day New England/Canada cruise that has a couple ports stops in Canada.  You Can get off of the ship for tours and activities in Canada but you CANNOT just get off, take your luggage and go home unless you make prior arrangements with the cruise line.   AND, that will also depend in part upon the cruise line's policies. The ships maintains a manifest of all passengers which is used to clear the ship at each port and when it returns to its starting point.  Immigration officials will need to know well before the ship arrives whether there will be any changes to the passenger manifest.

Royal Caribbean is one of the cruise lines that I know does allow "partial cruises" and you must submit a request a week before the cruise in order to do this.  Web link:  http://www.royalcaribbean.com/content/en...

Now if you get sick and need to leave the ship for medical reasons the cruise line will take care of doing that as soon as is possible.

  2. You can get off at the ports and go back on board but u CANNOT just get off and go home. That is actually breaking the Jones Act Law and for that you can be fined up to $1000 or even more. Check with your cruise line.
