  1. You need to call Verizon at (800) 922-0204 to find out if your phone will work, and to specifically ask them to turn on international roaming.

It looks like although they have a deal with a lot of ships, they only have one Princess ship (Grand Princess).  That said, I could have sworn I used my phone (at&t) when I was on Caribbean Princess a few years ago.

That said, if it does work, according to Verizon's website it's $2.49 a minute. Ouchie.

Oh, and turn off your phone when you're not making outbound calls.  At least with at&t, if someone calls and leaves a voicemail -- ie, you don't even pick up -- you get charged the $2.49/minute while they leave their dumb rambling VM.... and another $2.49/minute to LISTEN to it.

With **extremely** conservative voice use and email set to "download headers" I had a $200 additional phone bill for a recent 1 week cruise.  (It was data that killed me.)

If you want to talk to your BF, your cheaper option is to get a phone card and call from payphones when you're on the islands.  It's not something we do much in the US anymore, but every port will have a bunch of payphones (all the sailors use them).  Otherwise you may experience phone bill-induced trauma.  But it's your call.  =)

  2. You can use it while in ports but be ready for a HUGE phone bill. The ship can do a bill for satelite phone on the ship, that would be cheaper but its still pretty pricy. Other then that it is fun.

  3. You can use it in Puerto Rico for free and in some other ports.  I went on the Princess Caribean cruise last year to barbados and antigua and that and used my phone once in a while and it was just its normal rates.  Why would you tie yourself down with being on the phone all the time?  There is sooooo much to do on a cruise and way too little time.

  4. I HATE ALL PHONES, BUT MOST SHIPS HAVE INTERNET SPACES ON BOARD... YOU MIGHT TRY THAT... CRUISING IS THE BEST TIME EVER, GO EVERY YEAR... ALTHOUGH I'M MUCH OLDER THAN YOU, I CAN STILL SAY YOU WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME... REMEMBER TO WALK A LOT IN PORT, IT WILL HELP YOU KEEP THE WEIGH OFF.....

  5. Cruises are awesome.  You can and I reccomend you bring your phone.  You wont get service on the boat but some of the islands do.  Just be aware or the rates.  Don't be suprised if its over $1 a min.

  6. I love cruising.  I havent been on that particular cruise but I imagine it will be a lot of fun.  About the phones I went on a cruise in Sept.  I was in America for part of it than out of states for part of it.  When you're in the US no roaming fees.  When you are out of the US like at Sea the phone will work but it is very expenisve.  You get charged like twice once by the ships sattelite cell phone carrier than by your carrier. So not really worth it to even have your phone on.  I got charged for my phone just ringing.
