  1. If you book shore excursions from private companies the Cruise line will not hold the ship for you if you get stuck traveling.

  2. ive been on a carnival cruise and their "excursions" are eh. I would suggest going off on your own and finding your way around the place. You will gain more culture and get a real sense of the place.

  3. that is up to  you and the excursions you want to go on, I do normally don't book them through the ship, we just explore on our own and get a tour after we get there it can be cheaper if all you want is a tour of the city you are porting in.

  4. Explore on your own but don't go too far! You don't wanna get lost...

Hmmm it would be nice to get lost with you though :-)

  5. It depends on how much time you have to research any outings you might do on your own.  You want to make sure you see the important things.  Ive done both ways and I think I liked the excursions more.

  6. Check to see if the thing you want to do is far form the ship and you might be cutting it close to get back in time.

If you book with the cruise line for a trip that might cut it close to depature and the line has 20-50 people they will hold the boat. If you are not on the ship and your on your own. They leave. No kidding. Experience - seeing some left behind at a port taught me this.

If your in a small port and close by - rent a cab. If your part of a cruise group they get priority and can bump a regular walk  up patron for some things. They get a lot of biz form thte ship so those folks come first.
