I dont really know much about cruises. Help me, please!!!

I am going either to Hawaii or the Carribean.

- Do you know how much it will cost?

- Have you ever been on a cruise?

- What are things (other than clothing) are recomended to bring?

If you can answer any of these questions, then that will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. =]

  1. Tinkertoy is dead on with his advise.  The only thing I would add would be to bring 2 extra suitcases.  One of them the maximum size for carry on and another that is regular sized that you would check.  Inside the smaller one pack a case of your favorite bottled water and any other assorted plastic bottles of drinks like Gatorade or such.  Also in the smaller suitcase pack 3 or 4 tall kitchen trash bags (the ones with drawstrings).  Place the small suitcase inside the large one along with a Sunday newspaper.  Enjoy your water and drinks while on the cruise and on tours.  The night of the last day of the cruise pack your dirty clothes in the trash bags in the large suitcase and in the suitcase you will have brought your clothes in.  The clothes always take up more space dirty and wadded up than neatly folded.  Use the small suitcase to pack your souvenirs and things you bought using the Sunday paper to wrap them and pack them up.

  2. take some motion sickness meds!!! Bonine or Dramamine!! good luck and have fun!

  3. I've been on a couple of cruises and found this site to be a big help:

    http://www.cruisecritic.com/

I got a lot of information here.  Good Luck!

  4. okay, so...

the cost: the typical cruise is 6 to 7 days and runs between 1500 and 4000 depending on length and stateroom/suite selection.

yes, i've been on three transatlantic crossings with cunard and one alaskan cruise with NCL. this coming christmas i'm going on another cruise to the Bahamas again with NCL. (NCL is a really great cruise line)

besides clothes, bring basic beach things like your swim suit, goggles, and sunscreen, etc. don't worry about towels, flippers, boogie boards, umbrellas and larger items like that because these can almost always be rented off the ship or once on shore.

  5. Since you "don't know much about cruises", you'll need to do some research.  You need much more information than you could get here.

Go to your library or a bookstore and get a book on cruising.  You might also want to get a guidebook on Caribbean islands.  If you like the "Dummies" series [no offense!], they have a guide to cruising.

Caribbean cruises generally cost about $100/day/person for the basic cruise fare, taxes, port fees, etc.  Alcohol, spa services, tips for service people [mandatory], shore excursions, airfare, transfers, casino costs, etc. are all additional charges.

The cruise guide will probably give you a basic packing list, or there are many available by doing a search on that topic or  you can go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards" and find that topic thread.

There are so many variables to consider, that you really need to do your own basic research.  Once you've narrowed things down a bit, you should consult with a travel agent, preferably one who is experienced in cruise travel, to make your final plans.

Good luck, and have fun with the research!
