Are you staying with friends, by any chance? If so, and they have the Free box, you can call land lines for free. Otherwise, skype.

go to your local at&t. get a prepaid world wide phone. its like $50 for everything along with a few minutes. or if your stuck in france, cell phones are extremely pricey and they get like 60 minutes a month!!
