  1. The best thing you could start doing is walking and stretching.

Something to ask: what altitude do you live at, and what altitude is the resort at you are going to? If you live in Florida, and go up to the mountains in Colorado or Utah, the altitude will by itself be a very difficult thing to deal with. To help with that, or even in general, drink lots of water to stay hydrated, and if you are going up to altitude, bring Tylenol or Aspirin, as head aches are a common symptom of altitude sickness.

  2. Nothing can get your body ready for that type of sport.  You will not be able to walk the next day.  I went to Austria to ski when I was 23 and was hurting for like 3 days.  Good luck!

  3. you dont need to be "in shape"

your legs may hurt a lil the next day but it will go away once you start going again

  4. Bunny hill for you, all I can say to that.... But at least Skiing is easier than snowboarding...

  5. Start a daily routine today of jumping rope  and an Exercycle for 15 minutes each every day, go swimming everyday for 1/2 hour.  Take ski lessons, use the a "shaped ski ", tighten your boots around your foot. You should have only your foot and your sock in the boot. Your foot should not move in the boot, but wiggle  toes is correct.  Stay in a lesson package for the whole time.  Practice balance at home first with one foot off the floor, ease into one foot and eyes closed,  chin up and look ahead to improve your balance.

Take it easy the first day, cool your muscles with cold packs or ice packs for about 20 minutes immediately after skiing ends for the day.

This will help avoid the sore muscles so common to everyone. If at a higher altitude than you are used to, stay overnight at the base lodge to help adjust your lungs to air.

Learn to properly edge your ski or snowboard so you can control them.

Make friends and enjoy the sport. It is as much a social sport as a snow sport.

  6. I can not beleive the rubbish some people write on here.

Go cycling if you can, as much as you can to build up your leg muscles and just eat a healthy diet. I managed to shed 5lb while on my ski holiday over New Year.

    Just have fun!

  7. In three weeks you don't have enough time to"get into shape".  The best you can hope for is to stretch out a bit.

I look forwards to seeing you in the ER.  We are good and can keep you stable until the orthopedic surgeons get there and put the pieces back together.

  8. I am also 51 alittle overweight and I only ski 1 week per year. With the short time you have stretching and bicycling are your only hope, BUT very important item"" short Skis are easier to control and use less muscle" Over the years I have shortened to 150s, 190s at 25yrs and down. Good luck
