I am going to Cancun with 2 sons (8 & 11). I am 40 yo, and a bit heavy set. Will the zip lines be hard for me?

Do you just hang using just upper body strength? Or does your but sit in the sling?

Also are there places to go during the day for shopping and is it safe to walk aroung the city, maybe have lunch out. We are staying at a resort and I want to see the city , besides out horseback riding, pirate cruise and sky rider. I decided to skikp Xcaret or Xel-ha... should I chage this idea? Thanks all.

  1. You'll be very safe, don't worry about that.  I didn't do zip lines so I can't answer that.  We took the city bus (.65 per person) to the flea markets north of the party zone and had a great time.  There is also a mall on the bus line too.  You and your kids can also take the bus to the club zone and walk around.  There is a lot to see in that area so make sure you go.

    You'll have a great time.

  3. If you go to a safety conscious place for the zip lining you shouldn't have any problems - you should be clipped on by a good safety harness so you're not completely dependent on your own strength (go to somewhere that checks their equipment regularly and has trained guides)... imagine if you lost your grip! Being heavy set will probably make it even more of a thrill for you because you'll go faster! I recommend Hidden Worlds Cenotes Park. They are very safety conscious and have some great zip lines (some in the jungle and one that lands you in the water of a beautiful cenote - awesome!) You'll find some of the nicest cenotes there too - excellent for swimming and snorkelling - as well as other great jungle adventure activities.

Personally I think you're right to avoid Xcaret and Xel-Ha - they're very touristy... but then that's just my humble opinion. The truth is that I also tend to avoid Cancun fot the same reasons! Yes, there are plenty of shops and places to eat etc. And there are LOTS of other tourists so as long as you're a bit savvy you shouldn't have any problems. Personally I prefer Playa Del Carmen for shopping / eating out, etc. It's very touristy too but nothing like Cancun and has a safer smaller feel to it with a nicer atmosphere. You could check out Trip Advisor for other ideas. In The Roo is a great website for Playa del Carmen too. Have fun! :)
