  1. Travellers cheques. Easy to replace if lost or stolen and accepted everywhere. Once the visa is gone it is gone and

    so is your money.

  2. This is THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE. If you are going to travel with a lot of money, have it in different types of securities and keep them IN DIFFERENT PLACES...

Get a Money Belt... you can easily carry $2000 to $3000 in $100 bills in a money belt... I know.. I do it all the time... have some money in travelers cheques... have some credit cards with a low cap.. $1000 or $2000.. Mainly... NEVER keep it all together... figure how much you may need to buy an airline ticket back to where you came from and keep your money in amounts of that size and STASHED around yourself and your luggage.

I've traveled with a much as $50,000 at times and you would never know it... or find it.

  3. A visa card, visa check card (you'll have to sign for purchases), will work fine.  The exchange rates through the credit card are better than the ones at the currency exchange.

Also, the ATM exchange rates are decent too.  When we were in Rome in April/May, we found that only some of the ATM's worked with our cards, but we had no probelms finding ATM's that worked, once we identified the bank branches that worked.

  4. Traveller's checks are not widely accepted here in Italy. Your prepaid visa will be fine, or just keep the money in an account on a global  ATM network and withdraw here periodically. (ATMs are called Bancomats here if you come to Italy.)

  5. I prefer American Express Travelers Checks.

Keep a record of the numbers in a safe place and they can be easily replaced if lost.
