  1. Being a US driver doesn't mean much to me. If you drive around the Boston area, Los Angeles or New York, then I guess Athens is no different. Then again, if you need 10 minutes to show me where on earth you live in the US..that

    might be a bit different.

    Few remarks:

    1. Europeans drive fast. So fast that you have probably not seen anything similar in the US (100 miles/hour is typical and 110 or more is not unusual on the national highways). So drive always on the right lane. Don't even think to drive with anything less than 100 miles/hour on the left lane. In some places like Germany, there are no speed limits at all! How else Germans gonna enjoy their Porche and Italians their Ferrari...:)

    2. On most parts, Greek roads are quite good. Which makes most drivers drive even faster...!

    3. Greeks in particular are quite "aggressive" in driving. So drive defensively.

Within the first few hours, I am sure you will get used to it and realize that the differences are not that big anyway. I mean they drive better than some rednecks in the US I have seen...Perhaps you might even realize that you like driving in Greece and in most countries of Europe: a sense of freedom and scenery you have never experienced in the US.

Welcome to Europe and welcome to Greece

  2. I agree for renting a car. You will see amazing things. Please have in mind that Greeks are a little bit crazy drivers, but that's OK will get used to it in one day. The worst part in Greece are the road signs. The road signs have not been updated, even me l get lost! So l suggest you buy a good map!!!

In some places of the main roads there are toll

Also the Greek road system has nothing to do with the excellent roads in USA

  3. well Greeks drive on the right hand side of the road which for you will be normal. But just listen out for the non stop car beeping and crazy taxi drivers!

    Have a nice holiday!

  4. If you can't drive a stick shift is your number one concern.

Then is the roads and the crazy drivers. Put them all together and the answer is hire a taxi or use public transportation

  5. I am from Canada,i travel to Greece every year and i always rent a carr.

I rent a small car because i use it in Athens,i never have a problem, especially traveling to the country.

You have to remember that people there are on edge but the odd one will be out of line.

Don't drive on the left lane and you will be just fine,if at some point you do they will appear out of no were flash their lights and you have to move out of the way but in all my travels no ugly experiences.

Athens is very complicated and it can be difficult but driving away from Attiki Odos is just a breeze.REnt a car and don't worry you will have a fabulous time, doing your thing and not depending on other peoples schedule.
