I was told it was cheap to by souvenirs like sweaters, jewelry and crystal in the USA then to try to buy it in Ireland. For example I wanted to get my mom Clan Aran wool Sweater and I was told it would be cheaper to order it off the internet then to actually buy it in Ireland- sweater being from the same store.

Is this true??

  1. Yes, I would have to say that that would most likely be true, though you could always compare prices before you buy. Check out the things that you'd be interested in getting before you leave, and keep them in mind when you go shopping. Make sure you are also familiar with currency conversions. That will help you out alot as well.

If you prefer to shop in Ireland, I would steer away from the more popular shops, and check out the smaller shops to see what they've got to offer. Many places I have been or lived in that had alot of tourists would mark prices up during tourist season to make more money off of them. Keep an eye out for this as well.

  2. I would not recommend the sweater unless your Mom lives somewhere really cold - they are very thick and very warm to wear. The exchange rate is not good for the dollar, but you can buy everyone small things when in Ireland, they have tons of tourist centers/information points in Dublin that have a decent selection.

Not sure about that internet store thing in terms of price - it might be true. You would be better off if she needed to exchange it.

  3. sadly it is true in some cases!!

I'm Irish but live in Canada and I can get aran sweaters and Irish linen garments cheaper over here-at Winners and TJ maxx-NOT import speciality stores

  4. If you're going strictly by price, you will almost always be able to get some things less expensively on the on the internet and back home, but I have many things that I've purchased on vacations (including my favorite Aran sweater) that hold enormous memories for me. I'll never forget finding that little wool mill down a side-street in Killarney and finding the perfect sweater, or watching Waterford crystal being made and bringing a peice home with me. A souvenier is supposed to remind you of your trip, not just to be another knick-knack cluttering up your house. Sure, I could have bought a kimono on the internet, but don't you think I love the one I bought in Kyoto even more, even if it did cost me a bit more than I might have paid?

And there are plenty of bargains to be had when you look for gifts while traveling. Just look for them.

  5. I am going to Ireland soon too, so I'll be in the same situation! LOL. It sounds like you are thinking about buying stuff here and then giving it to your family as if you bought it there in Ireland. Don't do that. Buy inexpensive souvenirs while you are there. They will be more meaningful that way. If you can find the jewelry, crystal and sweaters for less money on the internet now, chances are you will always be able to find them.
