I went to Killarney for St. Patrick&#039;s Day a few years back. Definitely go horse riding  and walking around the countryside. It&#039;s so beautiful, and you won&#039;t know what green really is until you get there. Also don&#039;t forget to get a Guinness while you&#039;re there. I never really cared for that beer too much until I had it in Ireland.

If you&#039;re going outside of the summer months, you&#039;re pretty much guaranteed some tranquillity.

The least tranquil places are the cities, particularly around the Bank Holidays. And some towns when local festivals are taking place, but those are usually during the summer months.

I think you&#039;ll get a lot of suggestions from other answerers, so you should investigate their suggestions.

One thing you should be aware of if you&#039;re an Ireland first-timer: the distances, while they look short, take much much longer to travel than you would expect, as the roads are not very fast. In remote areas they are quite narrow and twisty, even close to the famous Lakes of Killarney. So if you&#039;re hiring a car, get a small one.

Also, don&#039;t believe a thing you hear about the Guinness. It&#039;s disgusting no matter where you drink it! I&#039;m a Smithwicks drinker myself, that&#039;s the ale that&#039;s brewed in Kilkenny.

If you&#039;re riding or walking in the countryside, please be considerate of people that live and work in the countryside. Even in winter, there are cattle, sheep and horses in fields. Do not ride your horse in fields with other animals or if it looks recently planted (you will NOT be thanked), and before you go walking in fields with cattle especially, make sure there is no bull (dominant male in full possession of his male faculties) as these animals are very territorial and will attack what they perceive to be a threat - and you don&#039;t need to wave anything at them. Also, be aware that if you have an accident on someone&#039;s land, they are not liable. Stick to public walkways and find out where commonage is, and where is safe to ride out.

Have a look at Garten Outdoor Pursuit centre in Donegal. It&#039;s certainly peaceful.  Also check out Lusty Beag which is in County Fermanagh I think, saw a documentary which was aired last week and it looked absolutely amazing.

You don&#039;t say what part of Ireland you are going to but if you head west towards Connemara in Co. Galway it is lovely there.  Feel like you are miles from everything else in the world.  You will be able to fish, walk and go horse riding in Clifden on the beach.  Galway City which is about an hour drive from Clifden is a lovely city to relax in and great pubs.
