I am going to Italy! What should I see?

start from florence... the the italian culture was born... then just have fun around.. italy is full of  beautiful places not just the most famous ones

As much as you can ... but make sure to leave some 'open' days for just sitting in a gorgeous cafe or on a green hillside and watching the people go by :-)

Rome is a fascinating place to start, and there are lots of great 'day tours' offered by bus companies which will take you to the most popular places.

You can also have a lot of fun discovering some of the more out of the way and hidden spots.

Sienna is beautiful, Assissi is fascinating and of course Florence and Venice are famous because of the many wonders of each.

Once you arrive in Italy, the problem will not be what to see ... it will be what must I miss out on!

Visit some websites and decide the main things you'd like to see (because you have a special interest or couldn't think of missing them), and plot your course using online maps.

Remember also ~ the historic parts of most places are small enough to see by foot, so walking tours are a real possibility and much cheaper! And do pre-book everywhere you can, because you do not want to spend your lovely holiday in line!

I live in Moscow, but I visit Italy every year. I like the South of the country, especially Naples, Capri, Ischia, Palermo, Lecce, Alberobello, etc.

so much its not funny!!

I only did a few cities, but I want to go back and see more.

I reccommend all the cities I went to:

Verona - nice feel

Venice - unique to all other cities really and you have to see it (only need about 2 days max tho as its quite small)

Siena - wish I had seen more, its a lovely medieval town.

Montepulciano...I was supposed to be staying in Siena, but ended up here, but its a lovely hilltop village, that makes wine and has great views of the surroundings

Rome - wow...lots here, lots of Roman and renaissance to keep you busy for days....the vatican too (incl sistine chapel and st peters)

I did a day trip to pompeii which was worth it...I was amazed at how big the town was..ie not a couple of buildings. I could have gone to Capri and sorrento and I'm sad I didn;t as I hear they are stunning.

Florence....very busy but beautiful buildings, very renaissance (eg duomo is stunning), David and ufizzi (spelling!!) are must sees...

I did a day trip to Pisa (only the tower is worth seeing here, but its a great sight) and then onto Lucca (a mini florence, with less people!) which was lovely.

Bologna- again a medieval feel and a city I quite liked.

I am sure there are many more places to see, but this was my trip (12 days..not long enough boo hoo)...I hope you enjoy it, the food and sights as much as I did!

I just got back from Sicily.  You should take a ferry over from Italy and check out places like Mt. Etna and Taormina.  If you like adventure and history then you'll love northeast Sicily.  Otherwise in Italy I'd say you should see the Vatican City & Sistine Chapel, leaning tower of pisa, venice canals, St. Peter's Basilica, and don't forget to try some pasta!  The pastries are also gorgeous and I recommend apricot turnovers.

Pickpockets are everywhere especially in tourist places so be smart don't walk around with your head in the air, and don't show cell phone or digital camera always put your bag not on shoulder!

Siena is stunning.  I always had avoided Venice because it seemed too cliche - boy was I wrong - Venice should not be missed.  Rome and Naples are also big winners - more chaotic than the north, but with better food and more historical significance.
