  1. If your group is into art then the Prado Museum (web: http://www.museodelprado.es ) is great. But if not, I wouldn't spend up to 3-4 hours of my one day in Madrid there.

What to do? That's easy. WALK! Visit the usual places like the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, walk along the Gran Via, through the Huertas Neighborhood, around the Palacio Real and Plaza de España, the Plaza de la Cibeles and boom, you've filled your one day. If you want to relax, walk over to the Retiro Park "lake" and rent a rowboat for 45 minutes.

You all might spend an hour (or two) touring Madrid on the double-decker touristic bus, MadridVision (web: http://www.MadridVision.es ) for a good overview of the city while listenging to some history too.

The above will more than fill your one day in Madrid. Enjoy!

  2. You HAVE to go to the Prado.  If you have time, stop somewhere for a snack, right near there, then walk down the Paseo del Prado, and walk up the Gran Vía to Puerta del Sol.  Stop and find the point zero marker, the Center of Spain, and then work your way up to the Plaza Mayor for either some food (tons of restaurants right there) and a bit of window shopping.  You should be out of time, so grab a metro at Puerta del Sol to the train or Airport, whichever.
