  1. "the Dominican" is a person, not a place.

  2. These are tips I have been telling everyone (i got back from Punta Cana 3 weeks ago..went for my honeymoon).

    1) Bring plenty of cash when traveling to a country (make sure you have low bills as well..u never know when ur going to hafta tip someone). In the Dominican Republic we had about $30 in one dollars bills. We stayed in Dreams Resort down there. However, be sure to keep valuables safely locked in something in ur room when you leave. U never kno when a maid might decide to be sneaky and go through something.

    2) Regardless of what country you go to, learn the currency rate and how to figure it up. This way when you come across vendors' you will not get jipped out of your money. This place seems very popular for Europeans (we saw mostly Germans, Italians, Brittish) but we did of course see Americans.

    3) Make sure all jewelry, regardless of the value of it, stays in your purse when traveling on the plane. I had a pair of earrings stolen but my hubby and I believe it happened in Atlanta. They do check ur bags manually at the Punta Cana airport b4 ur bags get 'checked' at the airport front desk. Be sure to keep anything u don't want completely in the sight of strangers down in ur suitcase. I forgot to zip a certain part of and my undies bout flew out but they didn't -_- embarrassing

    4) Be sure to unblock your debit/credit card before you leave the country :-)

    5) Do additional research to make sure if u hafta pay to get into the country or even leaving the country. Different places vary. Everyone has to buy a "tourist" card as soon as they fly into Punta Cana, DR (i guess this is for others place in the DR). But in US dollars it is $10 PER PERSON.

    6) Print out every single document that relates ANYTHING to your trip wherever you are going. Sometimes hotel ppl will keep ur copy so be sure to have a backup to be sure.

    7) On a copier, make copies of any important ID items (passport, license, ssn card, credit card) just in case you might loose it in the other country.

  3. I went with my family 2 years ago. We stayed at The Bavaro Princess, an all inclusive resort. Inside the resort was very nice and the food and drinks were good. If you go outside the resort to do some souvenir shopping you will find the locals leave their garbage and litter all over the place. The merchants will try to sell you all kinds of stuff, cigars, and the traditional island alcoholic beverage called Mamajuana, not to be confused with the stuff some people smoke. This Mamajuana is made from tree bark and roots with herbs and spices added to some kind of alcohol and honey base. The merchants will insist that you accept a cigar from them and they will pour you a shot of Mamajuna telling you that it will cure anything that is wrong with you. They are just trying to make a sale. When you walk to the next shop the next merchent will take the free cigar that you just got from the guy next door and tell you that his are much better as he gives you one of his to sample. They are some poor folks there.

We bought a few items just to stimulate the ecomomy and to show that we did not need cigars and the other stuff.

Oh this is the big one that I almost forgot, and it pi$$ed off everyone as we entered Punta Cana.

Our travel agent did not tell us, so you might want to ask your agent as so not to be unplesantly suprised if the same policy is in effect.

After landing in Punta Cana  we had to pay a visitor tax of like $15 or $20 a head as they checked our passports before we could pick up our luggage. We shelled out an unexpected $75 or $100 bucks for our family before we got out of the airport. Let me tell you what there were people who were beaching about their travel agents not letting them know about this hidden cost.

When we departed they were shaking down peoples carry on bags as people were passing the boarding gate and there were tables full of confiscated, CUBAN CIGARS, shampoo, mouthwash, deoderant, hairspray, bug repellent, and suntan lotions after they screened about the the first 50 or 60 passengers in line.

The funny thing is all of a sudden they stopped screening people and the rest of the people passed unchecked. I guess they didn't want the flight to to be late for departure. So unless you are squeeky clean or don't mind loosing peronal products you might want to hang towards the back of the line when departing Punta Cana. You'll get to see what others lost.

Bring your nacessities and don't forget your sunglasses because, like any tourist trap, they will stick it to you if you have to pay for something you forgot.

Oh one last thing, there are a lot of Euorpean tourists there and quit a few woman went topless on the beach and some went topless around the pools inside the resort.

Apparently , 7 out of 10 are dellusional or they just don't give a hoot. So don't be surprised, although you might, at times, be disgusted. LOL!

    Enjoy your vacation.

  4. The answer from " Zigfield" describes very well how is the hotel strip of Punta Cana/Bavaro nothing outside the hotels!!! That's the major reason, that I as VIP tour operator work exclusively with hotels in Puerto Plata, much better and so much to do and to discover for our guests!! Punta Cana is only hotel, bar, beach(small), and thats it!

    Happy Feet

  5. We go every 2 years. You will love it. Not sure what resort you are staying at,but I recommend Bavaro Princess All Suits Resort or one of the Riu Resorts. The people in punta cana are very friendly and willing to accommodate. The only thing I don't care for is when you walk along the streets near the resorts the venders are quick to barter for a quick sale. If you do any excursions I highly recommend the outback safari and the zipline. They are both a blast. Also,if you leave dollar bills by the frig the maid will restock it with lots of extras. They prefer the american dollar.

  6. It's amazing - you'll have an awesome time - stay at the Barcelo Bavara resorts - there's 6 resorts in one and you have use of all 6 - disco, casino also plus they have pizza parlors poolside!
