  1. Yes you will find them on the spot.

Many of the guides are students earning their crust and all of them have to be registered. If in doubt ask to see their guide permit.

As you wonder around looking lost you will probably be accosted by a 'tout' who is gathering together a group for his/her guide. These are common and quite legitimate.

Ask how much, what language (don't assume that they'll all be in one of yours) and when the tour starts.

The group will gather around the guide who will take your money and lead you all into the Colliseum via a group entrance (he'll ask you to wait a minute while he buys enough tickets to cover all of you). After that you should follow closely and not lag behind or you'll miss the talk. If you miss the talk then you may as well have gone in solo.

    Take lots of photos too.

If you try and book through your hotel you will pay a fortune and won't get any better service. I wouldn't bother.

Incidentally, don't even think about going to any restaurant or snack bar within view of the Vatican. They WILL be extremely expensive and mostly indifferent quality. If you go to the Vatican Papal Appartments (to see the Cistene Chapel etc) please go very early. The queues build up quickly. The public cafe inside there does the best pizas I've ever had in Rome (ironic isn't it?).

  2. You can avoid the line at the Colosseum ticket office either in the morning or evening by going to the ticket window at the Palatine Hill and buying a combination ticket. The Palatine Hill entrance is past Constantine's arch on the right from the colosseum or there's another near the forum.

You can also buy a ticket on-line at: http://www.tickitaly.com/tickets/colosse... or http://goitaly.about.com/gi/dynamic/offs...

When you already have a ticket, you can bypass the line at the ticket window and just walk in at the entrance.

You really don't need a guided tour for this. A good option for you might be to rent the audio guide for the Colosseum. This is another way to avoid the line at the regular ticket window. You can get your ticket along with the audio guide and just walk in.

  3. There are no tour you just can join at the Colosseum.

But there are way to join and not to pay.

All you do is just you stay with tour but you turn your back looking at something else.

But your ears are open for the voice what guide is saying.

Or you just pay little money to tour manager just for the Colosseum just start the tour.

  4. Yep...or you can just tour by yourself...i went in june...11euros

  5. I am in Rome now, about a block from the Coloseum.  The lines are extremely long, almost wraping around the entire Coloseum and are 4 or 5 people broad.  I'm sure the wait must be several hours.  (The Vatican is the same way.)  I am traveling with a senior citizen, so we were not able to wait in these lines.  But you can get in, if you are willing to wait.

There is, however, a lot to be seen in the area from the outside.

  6. yes

  7. Yes you can.

Also Visit the Trevi fountain, it was in the film 3 coins in a fountain. There is a lovely little restaurant just around the corner from it. it is very romantic. The hotel concierge willbe able to help you out for tours and things so see him the day you arrive. Vatican is worth a visit to. I went at this time of year and though the queue was right around St Peters sq it only took 45 mins to get in. Also while you are in the area go to see the Sistine Chapel where they elect the Popes and the famous ceiling. A tip though get a map and always carry a bottle of water it can still get quite warm at this time of year some street vendors charge 5 euro for a 500ml bottle. Rome can be pricey too so don't be shocked when you are charged 8 euro for a pint in one part of town and only 3 euro in another. But it is a great city and have fun

  8. If you are staying in Rome, you can easily book a tour through your hotel. Just ask at the front desk.

  9. no probs when you get there you can just join in and there is plenty to do and see let them know its your anniversary and the guide will congratulate you both get a small restaurant and have a nice supper to celebrate throw a coin in the trevei fountain have a brilliant time and congratulations

  10. There are tons of tours available on site for you.

I found that you can take a 1 hour free 'teaser-tour' from all the companies on-site (no pre-registration) and get all the highlights for free.

When I did that, I found that you hear great information from different people, and I did about 3 teasers in 1 day.

It was totally free, informative, and you can spend weeks there with all the information available.

It will be a highlight of your life that you will never forget!

  11. you spelt colosseum wrong, 10.30 am is in the morning - not night - that's pm, and why is it only your wifes' anniversaRy? is it not yours too?
