  1. Unless you are a really tall freshman, your best chances are probably in starting back row.  Make sure you can accurately bump the ball.  Practice bumping, or passing to a designated target.  A good pass will allow the setter to have plenty of choices in the attack.

  2. Playing with friends and playing on a varsity level are different. I have played for 5 years and started on varsity as a freshman. I would def. get lessons and try to develop skills. (being tall helps, but hey its not something you can do on command)

  3. I made varsity my freshman year, which happened to be this current year.  some skills that you need:

    1. be able to hand pass the ball correctly- make a triangle, literally, by putting your thumbs and forefingers together, fully extend and bend your arms. MAKE SURE YOU BEND YOUR LEGS.

    2. when you pass a ball make sure that your shoulders are pointing in the direction in which you want the ball to go.- your hands(when your arms are fully extended in front of you) are kind of like an arrow that points to your target.

    3. when you hit (spike) a ball make sure the you snap your wrist forward- this puts top spin on the ball. ALSO, make sure that you follow through completely when you swing at the ball. and do NOT forget to jump.

    4. make sure that your serve reception position(how you stand when someone is serving a ball at you) is low. this means your knees are bent, you're back is not hunched over and you are balanced.

    5. a tip for passing- sort of tuck your butt under when you pass the ball. many a time i have had a fast hard ball hit at me and this strategy really helped.

  4. Some helpful hints-

Pass with your legs, don't swing your arms.

Make your forearms as flat as you can when passing.

When hitting, stay behind the ball. Don't worry about hitting the ball hard, focus on hitting it fast.

When you're blocking, don't stand there and watch the other team's hitter, watch the ball as it is set and line up with the hitter's arm.

When you're serving, don't throw the ball any higher than you have to. You want to hit it at the peak of the toss. Try to serve to the zones too. Don't serve to the same spot every time. And once you can do that, stare at the person you're going to serve at. It makes them incredibly nervous. It also causes them to think and therefore they usually mess up.

    That's about it. Good luck.
