I am going to be studying abroad in Australia, and i wondering what a good gift for my host family would be.

I was thinking there might be something that we have in the United States, that is hard to find in Australia that they would enjoy... Any ideas?

white castle sliders. they probably don`t have white castles down under.

We can get pretty much everything in Australia, but what they'd really appreciate is something that relates to you so that in future years, they can look back and remember your time with them. A tasteful souvenir from your home town or state would be perfect. We treasure a Wisconsin badger from our home stay guest.

I find calendars with pictures of your hometown scenery are a nice gift. Also keyrings, flags, beach towels, etc.. If the family have never been to America perhaps some currency would be worth bringing to show them. Photo's of your family and friends so they can learn a little about your life.

Things like maybelline and levi's are substantually cheaper in the US but I would be asking them for sizes and tastes first.

Something from your specific area.

I was given some special chopsticks by one Japanese home-stay, and a hanging wind-chime by another.

Both were specific to their area in Japan.

They are good because they are a memory of the visitor.

i just came back from America and i had the same problem with getting stuff for my host family. there are a LOT of foods in America which we don't have in Australia so bringing some of them over would be good, make sure you check our customs laws and declare them when you get to Australia or you could get a fine. as some things are heavy etc. i made a book and filled it with pics about my life in Australia and my host family loved it, its a lot cheaper and lasts longer too. anything will go down well, but things from your local area would be better.
