  1. Just dig as big as you want it. You'll want it to be deep unless you want to keep shoveling out coals and ashes everytime you want to start a fire. Then just put rocks or bricks around it and there you go.

  2. From a landscapers point of view you want to build it so it will blend into the surrounding yard and be big enough to clean. I built one last year and use it almost every weekend. I dug out a hole in the ground 3 ft by 54 inches about eighteen inches deep. I flattened the dirt floor and bought cinder blocks from my local hardware supplier. I put down a thick run of mortar and set the blocks into the cement mix. I went around all the sides and filled up the centers and went two block high. I filled the block up to the top and used a trowel making sure the blocks were smooth on top. I then went to the river and picked up flat river rock and brought them back and laid a rock wall around the top. This is removable. This pit is very easy to clean and reload with blocked firewood. We have a piece of plate steel , laid across the side, we use for cooking in cast iron skillets and the dancing embers  are out of this world. Once you do it right it is nothing to do but stack in some logs and start a fire. There is much to be said about a fire pit well made. Looks great, is natural looking  and I cannot tell you how much we have enjoyed our pit with cookouts and  watching the embers float up into the night sky.

  3. just clear all the grass around it and use dirt.
