I am going to build a house on a land used to be landfill befor is it going to be toxic in the future ?

the new area that I want to build my house used to be a landfill ,but i am getting a good deal on the house. my concerns are if there will be any health hazards in the future due to the decomposing , but the area was not a landfill to dump toxic materials it was only for garbage. thanks

  1. have the water and soil tested before and be extra careful if it is well water. you said house so test the basement for radon methane etc


  2. first, i'd worry a bit.

    even "garbage" many years ago, could contain just about anything.

    toxic wasn't distinguished as being any different.

    if there isn't a problem, then why are you getting a good deal?

    is it because someone wants to give you something?

    or is it because no-one else will buy it, for some reason or other?

    are you going to raise your kids there?

    that would worry me.

  3. even if the 'gabage' was all organic, its fermentation underground will produce methane gas that is explosive.

    i suggest you contact your state's environmental agency before proceeding!

  4. I would have the earth tested and also research what the landfill was and how long ago it was closed.
