Question:

I am going to buy a 9'0 longboard. What is the difference with thicker rails and between epoxy and fiberglass?

I ride a 6'10 epoxy surfboard and am ready to get a longboard. Im not sure if fibergalls rides better or where i should get a board from for under $550. i live in south orange county.

  1. Thicker rails mean more flotation.  If you surf already, you probably understand the difference between a rounded rail and a more "squared off" rail.  A thicker rail can take that a little farther so you can have a bit more transition and still retain some edge and buoyancy too.

    I personally prefer glass to epoxy boards.  I like the way they feel in the water, but I couldn't exactly tell you why.  The glass to me is just a smoother feeling in the water.  Glass boards are easier to repair, which I like.  

    As for where to get a board, just shop around.  Find one you like and go for it.  In the end, it's your preference that matters, and you can get both glass or epoxy boards for that price range without much difficulty.


  2. Fiberglass is on both types of boards. The difference is in the resin. One is polyester the other is epoxy.

    Thicker or fuller rails usually mean more flotation.

    As for the price. Every place is different. Try looking for a used one.
