What are some "good bangers" you can buy for this amount of money.

  1. Hard to say without some idea of your circumstances. If you're a young driver then insurance will be a big deal, so you're best off looking at the usual Clio, Fiesta, Polo, Punto etc. If fuel economy is a big deal to you then any of these cars will also fit the bill, as would some bigger Diesels, ie Peugeot 406, Mondeo, Passat etc. If you've got a good NCB on your insurance and don't do a big mileage, then you can take advantage of the fact that no-one else wants big thirsty cars and bag yourself an old BMW, Merc or even a Jag XJ6 for really stupid money, like £500!

  2. i would go for something small that would hold it's value, has a mot, most service history. Personally i would go for a cilo, then come with many engines from the 1.2 to the 1.6. If you want something bigger look for an astra you should be able to get a mk3 but with high mileage. If you want something bigger maybe a old mondeo. I would really stick to something small because new drivers will always look for these types of cars so u should be able to sell it on quickly.

  4. 1000 is still a lot of money if it turns out to need another 500 of work. Just make sure it has an MOT, service and the tyres are good. I would hope it wouldn't bang for 1000.

Can probably buy a 10 years old Cinquecento for 700 pounds. Or you can buy my old R reg 2.0 Rover 420 SLi for 600 if you like. It's too big for me. I'm in Wiltshire. It would be expensive for new drivers though with the insurance, and it's why smaller engine cars sell faster and keep their price.

  5. You can get a Mercedes 190E without leather or alloys for a few hundred...  Not bad on fuel in the 1.8 or 2 litre engines the 2.3 drinks a little more, the 2.6 is fast and smooth, the 2.5turbodiesel is smooth and frugal...  All of them are built like a safe, and what you spend on fuel you will save on repairs, and you will have a fast sleek safe car!

  6. Plenty around: My old 1993 BMW 318iSE is currently for sale at £500, good tyres, tax & MOT for six months, full history - a very good car for someone if it's still there!

Avoid Fiats, Fords, any Rover 1.4 regardless of price - stick to a Honda, Toyota or Suzuki - as above, buy with MOT & preferably tax, good tyres will save you a few hundred quid.
