Question:

I am going to court tommorow as a witness?

For a friend and his Lawyer told me to lie so that his case would be dismissed. I know this is unethical however the charges against him are somewhat mundane and no one will get hurt if I do.

Should I lie or tell the truth?

If I do tell the truth he may get a large fine and he is living on a fixed income.

  1. I don't  recall that  day.  It is not in my memory.  But if they have  proff and you are caught lieing you may also be  fined.  If he is  fined you may have  help him with bills.  It  depends how serious and  who else is  being hurt in this  case.

  2. Well, if you decide to lie, you should change your profile pic.

Also, are you willing to go to jail yourself for perjury, if caught? Ask yourself that and whether you want to be the one stuck with a huge fine. This person isn't much of a friend if they are asking you to put your own butt on the line.

Perjury is a serious offense and probably more severe than whatever your friend is charged with.

  3. I believe this is against law and ethics, I read it some where "what goes around comes around", be careful.

  4. If you lie and get found out you could be jailed for perjury.

I wonder what you mean by mundane?

How easily can they [prosecutors, police] find out you were lying?  If there's no way they can prove it, then go ahead.

If there is a possiblity you can be found out, you might want to play it safe and keep to the truth.

  6. you already know the answer.  right is right and wrong is wrong.  he can appeal for a lower fine but you have to do the right thing.  lying to cover for someone is a slippery slope - where do you draw the line anyway.

  7. Follow your heart. No one can determine your own set of ethics for you.
