I am going to do some retaining walls in my backyard maining to create garden areas and wondering if I use 4x4

untreated pine posts, would this be ok? Any suggestions how I to build them and any other suggestions, whether wood is good for this application...any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated

  1. Depending on how high you are planning on going. 4x4 will work. Make sure they are treated though and if you are going to plant edibles, make sure the 4x4's do not contain arsenic. Keep in mind you will only have straight lined beds. If you use the Windsor or Aspen stone you can create curves and have many other colors to chose from.

    PS Height of your wall will determine what type of material to use.


  2. You need to go heavier than 4x4. They will snap under vertical, or horizontal load unless you have support posts out at an angle. Go with cinderblocks. No need to worry about the rotting or snapping.

  3. I take it you mean you want to use the 4X's to build raised beds. That type of wall is made out of wood more than any other material.  Untreated wood will rot sooner of course, but should still last several years depending on your climate.   If you plan to stack them you will have a stronger wall if you have the tools to half lap the joints rather than trying to drive a nail through the full thickness of the 4x4.
