  1. Never been to England... but I have been to Spain.  We used calling cards multiple times there.  I probably went through about 6 or 7.  In Spain you go into any "Tabaco" store and ask for them... and I'm guessing that's not the case in England, so do search online for where to get them.

What it is is a card thing that kinda looks like a gift card or something.  In Spain, we'd buy the cheapest ones (€5) because you never know if they are going to work or not.  Once we bought one that just said "We're sorry; your card has been suspended." when you called the number.

So there is a number on the back of the card.  It'll be kind of a long number (9 digits usually).  You can go to any pay phone (well, in your case, phone booth?) and dial this number.  Then you'll scratch off that silver stuff to get your PIN # (usually like 10 digits or so).  After dialing the long number, a voice will tell you to enter your PIN.  So you dial that.  Then, it'll say something like "Please dial the number you wish to call."  So you dial the COUNTRY CODE, which for the U.S. is 001, then (don't wait or anything) you'll dial the phone number (starting with the area code.)  THEN, it will tell you how much time is remaining on your card, then you'll hear the ringing, hopefully, after this VERY LONG process, the person you are calling will answer.  Haha.

It's VERY confusing and complicated at first, but you get used to it pretty quickly.  You can also use your calling card on the hotel room phones, but the hotel may tack on fees for that (never happened to us at any of the 6 hotels we stayed at, but they may.)  The benefits to using the hotel room phone are 1) You get about triple the minutes on your calling card (yes, triple) than you would using your calling card with a pay phone.  And 2) You have a place to sit while you talk.

    Have fun in England! :)

  2. It would help to know where you are traveling from and where you will be calling once you are in England.  This will determine the type of calling card you will need and where is best to purchase it.

London is full of Newsagents and Convenience stores.  They are literally everywhere.  I would recommend visiting one of these shops once you arrive in England and asking the clerk for a calling card to call whatever country you need.  They will have them in different values right there at the counter.  Do not buy a calling card before you get to England, especially if you are from the US.  Even international calling cards that assure you they work worldwide will not.  I promise.  Buy your card once you get there.  Good luck.  Cheers.
