Give him 20 bucks if you're just going to give him money.  But a present is so much more personal!

Don't worry too much about the average amount.  Give no more than you can afford.  Depending on how close I am to the child, I give between 50 and 100.  If that is too high, 20 is still acceptable.

I've always stuck to $20.  You definitely want to stick to $10 - $20 though.  You can do $16 ($2 for every year of his age).
