  1. The answers you have been given are just what I experienced a few months ago.  On our first day we lunched in a nice mid-range restaurant in Jo-burg with seating indoors and out, and I noted that most of the mains were R45-55, and a beer or cider was R21.  Three of us ate dinner with a bottle of wine and dessert in an upscale restaurant in Paarl , and the tab was about R480.  If you are used to paying in euros, this will be cheap for you.  It is comparable to dollars, and so for Americans this is one of the few places the dollar stretches.  Unfortunately, that means that the rand is not holding up well, just as the dollar isn't holding up against the euro or pound.

I just purchased a painting form a gallery in SA that was about  R3200, and my card was debited $400, to give you an idea of the exchange rate.

Debit/check cards are accepted everywhere, and cash machines abound.

  2. If you are eating in a resturant (steak coke pudding) look at spending R100 per day, takeaways would be much less - around R30-R40 per day.

Dont forget you might want to buy stuff here too, like beads/leatherwork. So bring some spending money.

Dont bring too much cash, we have credit card machines and its safer than carrying around wads of cash.

  3. You don't really need ZAR in South Africa. From what I understand, the people there trade by bartering. It's still quite a backwards society: very rural with no major shopping centers etc. A great place to visit, but don't expect a first world country. My cousin told me he heard they only got cellphone towers there like 10 years ago... anyway...enjoy the safaris!

  4. In terms of alot, you just have to be a bit more clear on that one. . . Depends where you going to want to eat everyday?

Take-aways at KFC's and Mac Donalds etc will be about R30 - R40 a day.

However if you plan on eating at restaurants

    R100 - average place

    R200 - Upmarket place
