I am going to start a cichlid tank! I am so excited! But, I was wondering if anyone could give me some starters information and really cool pictures of neat cichlids available. I know they need rock surroundings and landscaping any other information about cichlids would be great. (I have a 23 gallon) any other landscaping would be great. Thanks so much!!

  1. lots of hiding places. as long as the water is kept right you will do ok. cichlids to me are easy to take care of. here is a sight to go to to look at pictures or to buy the fish. I have never bought fish on line because I have 3 petshops in my area that will either have the cichlid I want or they will try to get it for me.

  2. Well the first thing you need to do is decide between South American, Central American or African really.  The listing of rocks by JW is not all that bad, but let's suppose you go with open water Haplochromis Africans, all those rocks aren't going to mean squat so it does depend and why you need to narrow it down for us.

The tangledup link, I happen to know the owner of that site, Mr. Jeffrey Rapps.  He's local to me.  He's primarily into South Americans.  Malwaimayhem is ok, but cichlid-forum is much better.  Cichlid-forum not only has Africans but you can scan over South Americans as well.

I keep and breed Africans, over six different species so far in 1 years time.  I feel I've learned at least as much if not more then many breeders with longer years of experience then I have, and will be more then happy to advise you.  I help support another site in MSN, Everything Aquatic and we have an OUTSTANDING team of members there.  Feel free to drop by and look over our input there too.

23 gallons isn't going to support much.  There are some choices out there, but anything growing over 5 inches is not going to do well in your tank.  Also with a footprint that small, it's almost imperative that you learn to s*x your stock, since more then one male in a tank this size is going to lead to issues.  I'm confident JW would agree with me on that one.

Apisto's, Kribensis, and Shell dwellers are a few off the top of my head I'm sure would work, but each of these have different needs.  Please look over cichlid-forum.com and narrow down your water of origin and we'll go from there.

  3. cichlids can only go with cichlids
