  1. by pattern they mean like plaids, solid color.....and materials they mean fabric

  2. Go to your local fabric store. Jo-Ann Fabrics is a store that is in a lot of towns. They will have a big table at the back of the store, with books of patterns. Each  book has sections for "dresses", "crafts", and so on. Sit down at the table and browse through the books until you find a style you like.

When you find one you like, make sure it's labeled "easy" or "very easy". Make a note of the brand name on the cover of the book you got it from (Simplicity, Butterick or whatever) along with the pattern number. Show this to a clerk and tell them you are a first timer. They'll take you to a giant cabinet with drawers and show you how to find your pattern. On the back of the pattern envelope there is a list of the materials you need to make that item. The clerk can show you where everything is in the store and how to choose fabric. The fabric will be on a cardboard bolt, and the clerk will have you carry that to a cutting table where someone will cut off the right amount for your project. When choosing your fabric, look at the end of the cardboard bolt, and read the cleaning instructions and the price per yard. Make sure you can afford the fabric and can do the cleaning instructions. Once the fabric is cut for you, you can't change your mind.

Along with the materials on the pattern envelope, there are a few tools that you need to have on hand: Pins, good scissors, a seam ripper. Get the clerk to show you where to find all of these.

You might come out of there with sticker shock but it gets cheaper because you won't have to buy the  tools again for a long time.

    .

  3. A paper pattern you'd buy at a fabric store and what you need to make said item.

Fabric, pins, measuring tape, scissors, pin cushion, seam ripper, all that kind of stuff.

  4. They mean that you should purchase a paper pattern for say a dress or a blouse or pair of slacks from a sewing shop or walmart etc. And supplies would be things like; a good pair of scissors ,measuring tape, appropriately colored threads, a supply of straight pins & so on.

Why don't you ask the instructor of your class for a example supplys list to be more comprehensive
