I wanted to know this...

I know you have a slim chance of making a team if you serve it underhand straight up. I can't serve overhand at all. Instaead I am good at holding the ball at waist height and strike it side ways just enough to get it over the net (sometimes skim it) and have it drop at a good angle with an ok speed.

Do you think this serve will work?

  1. I had a hard time learning to serve overhand when I was young.  This is what finally helped me.  Hold the ball directly out in front of you, and when you toss it, don't let your hand drop too low.  This'll help you control your toss better.  Really extend your arm to make contact and hit THROUGH the ball.  Watch your hand make contact at the ball and don't let your hand drop.  Keep your hand in the air after contact.  This'll keep the ball from dropping in the net, or going side to side.  Hope this helps.  Learning how to serve overhand will make a difference not only in making the team, but also getting play time.  Serving's one of the most important parts of volleyball.  If you want to be respected on the court by your teammates, and your opposition, you need to learn how to overhand serve.

  2. The side-arm serve is nice.  I would do it in games and get an ace more then when I would when I would serve it over hand.  If you make the team they will teach you how to server over hand.  But the side-arm serve is nice to know.

  3. Yeah.. I don't think it matters what serve you do as long as it gets over... also, it's even better when it skims the net because that means the other team will have less of a chance to get the ball back over

So you'll probably have a good chance of making the team.

    Good luckkk :)

  4. I love this serve! It is unconventional in many ways, but i have seen it done successfully. An overhand serve does provide more power and has a better ace percentage, but a well placed side-arm serve can be just as affective. If you want to try out, I recommend doing so. Show your coach this side-arm serve. If its as good as you say it is, he will be impressed. Otherwise, he may help you work on an alternative serve. Not every player in volleyball has to serve, so a poor serve will not necessarily ruin your chances of making the high school team.

  5. go with it I have played two years of HS volleyball and there is always someone on some team in our conference who serves underhand. They can be the hardest to pass because as a passer you're not used to the speed change
