I am leaving on Friday 19th september and need to give four weeks written notice according to contract that means contractually; I need to hand in my written notice in next Friday (22nd August).

However, my manager is off next week. Although, my team leader is in . Should i hand it in today (call them both into a meeting and do it)? Or should I just do it as per the contract says (4 weeks) and hand notice to team leader next friday?

The reason I am asking is because I really dont want to do it twice - one to my team leader and one to my manager when he is back...would rather do it in one go - since they are both in today.

Doing it today means I will be giving five weeks notice and they could push me out in four weeks and I need the money for that extra week...

  1. If you need the extra money I would turn it in next week.  remember that your team leader in the absence of the manager is supposed to handle the responsibilities of the manager.  I would make a copy of the notice and write down the date and time and name of the team leader you turn the notice in to.  This way when the manager comes back you have documentation of the notice being turned in.  Also remember that just because you turn in a 4 week notice that the company may tell you that they might not need your services and more and you go early.  I wish you luck.

  2. Your last sentence is absolutely correct - you should NEVER give more notice than you need to for that very reason.  You should definitely hand it in next Friday.

I'm not familiar with your company structure but in most cases you would only speak with one person, not two - your official Line Manager.  An unofficial manager such as a Team Leader doesn't need to know immediately, and I would suggest that it's actually bad manners to tell them at the same time as your Manager - the Manager should know first.  But this is the person that is going to be off next Friday, right?

I would suggest that you resign next Friday to the HR department.  Tell them that you really would have preferred to discuss it with your Manager first but this isn't possible, and that you'd really appreciate it if they didn't say anything until you've had a chance to tell him/her yourself.  You're only telling them first so that they have the right amount of time as notice.

If you don't have an HR department, then you will have to resign next Friday to your Team Leader but use the same approach - say that you want to tell the Manager yourself on Monday.

  3. do it to both of them all together, and just say i wish to quit on this date
